It was an honor to be invited by the Economist Impact team to speak at the Future of Health Europe Conference in a fantastic venue: The Royal College of Physicians in Regents Park, London.

We took part in a panel entitled "Designing sustainable and resilient health systems for the future" moderated by Graham Cookson, Ceo of the Office of Health Economics.

The other speakers were :

Dr. Ali Hasan, Vitality

Frances Mortimer, Center for Sustainable Healthcare

Bjoern von Siemens, Caresyntax

Nicolas Gonzalez, European Parliament

We adopted a very pragmatic stance by stating that healthcare organizations have an enormous potential to improve and thus prosper, by simply focusing on improving their efficiency and performance. In our experience, this is possible just by applying a truly participative and effective change management approach and does not require investment or technology.

Sincere congratulations to the Economist Impact team for organizing such a high level and inspiring event. Particularly noteworthy was the presence of representatives of the WHO, EU Parliament and Commission, Ministries of Health,NHS as well as academic and research institutions.

Finally, it was a great opportunity to meet up with fellow members of The UK International Healthcare Management Association (UKIHMA)

We would like to express our profound gratitude to the executive management team of the François Baclesse Center for trusting and asking us to accompany them on this strategic visit to our Vietnamese partners: The Vietnam National Cancer Hospital (Hospital K) and the T&T Group.

The delegation was made up of Professor Marc-André Mahé, Professor Jean-Louis HABRAND, Doctor Carine Segura-Djezzar and Hermeline Delepouve
What we are building in Vietnam are long lasting "win-win" partnerships which will open up, previously unforeseen, horizons for all of us.

In the short term we will:

1) Put in place reciprocal exchanges of resources (doctors, technicians, nurses...) for training and acquisition of new skills.
2) Continue and further expand joint Tumor Boards (RCP - réunion de concertation pluridisciplinaire) (Breast, Digestive...)
3) Provide remote second opinions to patients who require it.
4) Identify areas in which research can be carried out jointly
5) Support efforts in the domains of screening, detection and treatment
6) Provide expertise in the fields of radiotherapy, genetics, protontherapy as well as consulting services

We are very eager to host our new partners in Caen as soon as possible so that we can familiarize them with the François Baclesse teams and facilities as well as return part of the wonderful hospitality they provided during our visit.

Even though it is an incredible coincidence that both institutions will be celebrating their centenary in 2023! = Two centuries of combined know-how in the fight against cancer!! It is also a very good omen and timing as we launch our internationalisation project on the eve of the second century of existence of these highly reputable hospitals.

As management consultants, our goal is to serve our clients by generating and accelerating changes which result in measurable improvements within their organisations and subsequently benefit their customers and employees.
To appear on the home page of the Francois Baclesse Comprehensive Cancer Center website as part of the Internationalisation Project is not only a huge privilege but it also stands as a symbol of an exceptional relationship which began more than a decade ago.
Fundamental values and principles such as Mutual Respect and Trust are often just considered as a given and not always personified with the deserved level of consciousness and diligence.
For us, our appearance in such a visible manner on our client’s website stands as a symbol of those fundamental values.
We express our profound gratitude to the entire Centre Francois Baclesse team and look forward to an ongoing relationship into the coming decade.

It’s been an amazing and very intense week in Dubai for Arab Health and the 2020 World Expo

The take aways from these few days are too many but just to list a few.

The global village is here in Dubai (16 nationalities for the Emirates crew on the flight from Dubai to Paris!). At the cross road of continents and despite Covid, Dubai is a place to be when it comes to doing business. No need to mention the incredible achievements in terms of urbanisation and infrastructure and the eagerness to adopt and deploy the latest technologies in all sectors. The Emirates have done a remarkable job in handling the pandemic: as an example, Abu Dhabi has a 98% vaccination, first drive ins and it’s just too easy and unfair to say the country is smal land rich. Healthcare is in full swing in the region and its invigorating to see so much passion and enthusiasm, perhaps qualities Europe has partially lost.

Arab Health is an event not to be missed and the 4 days literally flew by.

We were able to make contacts with representatives from 27 different nations, make ties with associations such as the Indian foundation for healthcare and wellness FHW, the Health Tourism Development Center of Islamic Countries HTDC, private medical travel companies based in Tunisia, Ukraine, India, Kazakhstan, Russia, establish links with hospitals from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, India...

Spend time on the Arab Health stands ofFrench Healthcare and UKIHMAhave the opportunity to meet government representatives, officials, physicians, health workers and business people as well as friends which it was a delight to finally see in person after so long.

Share the stage at the French pavilion at the World Expo 2020 with Ceo’s of French healthcare companies, start-ups and hospitals.

After this tornado of contacts and exchanges it is now a question of execution and delivery Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai is known for his leadership and vision and one of his famous quotes says it all. "The future belongs to those who can imagine it, design it and execute it. It isn’t something you await but rather create".

This part of the world is doing just that! It’s now our turn to get it done!

A huge thank you to all the people we met and who took the time to listen and exchange.

We look forward to the next steps!

After several years of informal relationships, we are delighted to announce that we have formalized a partnership with Telos Consulting Boost has participated in several Telos events and presentations including acting as a jury member for the Lean Healthcare Award competitions in 2018 and 2019 www.leanaward.it

What a great two days in the heart of the Mediterranean. Malta is an ancient crossroad of civilizations and a modern melting pot for businesses.
The Med-Tech World conference brought together moderators and speakers from many nations to talk about digital health. Numerous panels and workshops took place and it all ended with an industry awards ceremony.
Sincere thanks once again to the organizers for working so hard to make this conference a reality and success.
It’s hard to summarize such an intense 48 hours but we will try to nevertheless:
It’s an exciting turning point in particular after (during) the Covid accelerator.
Med Tech around the world is booming: attention, interest, passion, investment in the sector has exploded, but what is the reality on the ground? At this stage, we would like to say “promising” "but still a long, long way to go."
The conference touched upon a lot of the challenges and opportunities, as seen from different angles, facing the industry and there are many.
Another rather obvious point is that in order for the digitalization of healthcare to work, many different professions are required and need to work together. The huge variety of occupations, provenances and profiles present at the conference are a clear demonstration of that.
Finally, it’s a pity to see that there is so much duplication, everyone in his own corner trying to develop solutions to fix the same problems and not sharing enough their experience and knowledge with others.
These types of event help break down some of those barriers and remind us that human contact and exchange is essential to progress.

Ministers of Industry & Trade of Vietnam; Mr. Nguyen Hong Dien and Planning and Investment; Mr. Nguyen Chi Dung

Sometimes you work hard and you obtain nothing or a marginal result, other times you work hard and you achieve the unexpected. This is an example of the latter. When at the end of 2019, Professor Marc-André Mahé, the Ceo of the François Baclesse Cancer Center in Caen Normandy asked us to support an internationalization project as part of his strategy, we could not have imagined the Covid pandemic was just around the corner.

Almost two years later, here we are, with a major achievement the François Baclesse team can be proud of. On the occasion of the Vietnamese Prime Minister, Mr Pham Minh Chinh’s official visit to France after the COP26 in Glasgow, the François Baclesse Cancer Centre, signed two international cooperation agreements in oncology with Vietnamese partners.

These two agreements were among another 27 which were all signed on the 4th of November in Paris, with companies such as Airbus, EDF (French national electricity company), Banque Paribas, Sanofi Pasteur and others adding up to several billion dollars.

The first is a framework partnership agreement with the K Hospital in Hanoi (the leading cancer hospital of Vietnam) to mutually cooperate on three shared areas of focus: Care, Training and Research.

No alt text provided for this image
Prof. Marc-André Mahé and Prof. Le Van Quang, Director of the K Hospital

The second agreement is a memorandum of understanding with the Group T&T Co. Limited, represented by its Chairman and Managing Director, Mr. Do Quang Hien. The T&T Group is a major multi-field investment group, located in Vietnam (100,000 employees) with an international Health Division.

No alt text provided for this image
Prof. Marc-André Mahé, Ceo of François Baclesse with Mr Do Quang Hien, Chairman and Managing Director of the T&T Group. In the back row, the Prime Minister of Vietnam, Mr. Pham Minh Chinh and his ministers.

We are well aware this is just the first step in building these relationships and that a lot more work will need to be accomplished to make these partnerships effective and fruitful.

However, it is insightful to look back and analyze how we got this far:

  1. Unconditional support from top management: The senior management team unrelentlessly supported the project, even when other priorities came up. Covid not only prevented us from traveling but it also mobilized significant hospital resources and energy.
  2. Dedicating sufficient resources and always working as a team: In Paris last week, we were the only delegation with five members including the Ceo, Prof. Marc-André Mahé, Prof. Jean-Louis Habrand, radiation oncologist, Dr. Carine Segura, president of the medical committee, Hermeline Delepouve, director of communication, international relations and myself.
  3. Networking and working continuously in cooperation with our partners: We have been supported from the beginning by the Normandy Region headed by its President, Hervé Morin and his team, the AIC Group headed by Mrs. Nguyen Thi Thanh Nhan and our local advisor, Mr. Thang Mai
  4. A multidisciplinary team able to leverage complementary skill sets: Namely, the François Baclesse communication and international relations director, Hermeline Delepouve and Sophie Taillard, a member of her team. Marie-Pierre Desannaux, the executive assistant and many others it would take too long to list...
  5. Never giving up. It was not always easy to stay focused and motivated as visits and exchanges had to be postponed or canceled, as emails and calls were not being replied to, as the world's countries closed and focused on domestic priorities.

Opening up to the world sounds and seems like something simple and easy to do, but it's not, especially for a hospital. An internationalization project such as this one, aiming to set up partnerships in the domains of treatment, education and research with other cancer institutions around the world, is a very demanding and challenging objective.

The François Baclesse Cacer Center will be celebrating its centenary in 2023 and it is doing everything it can to enter in its second century of existence with a broader, richer and more global reach, built on a solid network of prosperous exchanges with its new partners.

It’s a huge honour to be supporting in our “Ambassador role” the management team of the Centre François Baclesse Cancer Centre in Caen, Normandy in an ambitious, high profile internationalisation project. The François Baclesse Cancer Center is a member of Unicancer, a unique network of 18 non-profit Cancer Centers (counting in total 21,000 employees) spread across France and treating annually more than half a million cancer patients. Learn more: https://www.baclesse.fr/en/ http://www.unicancer.fr/en

Alongside treating cancer, these Centers are also teaching hospitals and advanced cancer research facilities. The Unicancer network is the largest promoter of academic clinical trials in oncology at european level and fifth in the world by number of publications in oncology.

This past week, we had the privilege to host onsite a delegation from Vietnam headed by Dr. Nguyen Thi Thanh Nhan, President of the AIC Group and took part in some engaging and promising meetings.
Both parties are working hard to rapidly officialize a joint partnership agreement in the fields of treatment, research and training in the fight against cancer, leading to a mutually beneficial relationship.

With travel restrictions gradually easing, we are looking forward to travel to Vietnam during the first quarter of 2022 to materialize the partnership.

•   Erika Ziltener, President of the Swiss Patient Association who will be presenting a global outlook on the “VOICE OF THE PATIENTS”

•   Doctor Henry Perschak of the Hirslanden Klinik will play the role of the “DOCTOR”

•   Martha Schiller, Ceo of ProQualitas will give us insights on the “SAFETY” aspect of the patient pathway

•   Finally, Doctor Eyal Zimlichman Chief Medical and Innovation Officer of ARC Sheba Israel will endorse the “INNOVATION” role

The exchanges between these prestigious and highly qualified speakers will provide unique view points and debates and provide a different outlook on the challenges facing the deployment of E-Health when they pertain to the PATIENT

Dr. Lambert Montevecchi is a leading expert in the field of healthcare change management. He accompanies hospitals around the world in the implementation of process, system, organizational and behavioral improvements. He is concerned that the focus is always on the patient.

Medical technology is currently developing rapidly. Medtec companies are constantly launching new products on the market, which also brings great potential for process optimization in hospitals and thus lower costs. At the same time, many uncertainties are palpable because nobody knows exactly in what direction the health system as a whole will develop in the medium term. "We all recognize that unprecedented technological change is imminent for the healthcare industry. Now it is important to integrate the new technologies into the existing system, "says Italian health economist Lambert Montevecchi.

Patient is at the center

What is certain is that technical support can increase efficiency by automating key processes, optimizing diagnostics and treatments, and improving communication tools and systems. With all technological progress, however, the patient must not be forgotten. Montevecchi comments: "We are so focused on new technologies that we often forget who the heart of the system is - the patient. In the end, it is crucial that we improve the situation for him. That's the challenge. "

Optimization of the "patient pathway"

A step in the right direction could be made with the optimization of the "patient pathway" to German "clinical treatment path". Here, the hospital stay is compared with a journey that the patient undertakes. It begins before the patient reaches the hospital and continues after discharge. "This process has to be made as efficient as possible, also by using modern technologies," says Montevecchi. In addition, he must take into account the needs of the customers - ie the patients - at all stages. For example, surveys clearly show that they attach importance to short waiting times and the possibility of expressing their own concerns. And above all, they want to understand the treatment. "We know that more than 50 percent of patients do not understand what the doctor tells them. An alarming result! »Says Lambert Montevecchi.

Standard in the USA

The potential for optimizing processes along the patient pathway was recognized early in the US and has been successfully developed by many health care organizations since the mid-1980s. The advantages are obvious: The expectations of the patient can be better recognized, as well as causes that extend the length of stay. In addition, methods can be developed that improve the quality and cost-effectiveness of patient treatment. At the same time, thanks to the use of new technologies, many medical or paramedical tasks can be automated or technically supported. This saves time and increases quality. "Studies have shown that improving healthcare efficiency leads to quality improvement. The most efficient hospitals in the world offer the highest quality, "says the expert.

We encounter a lot of resistance

Compared to the US, patient pathway thinking has not yet been very well established in European hospitals. In the meantime, there are many hospitals with pathway managers to drive change. However, these are often embedded in a "silo" organization, which is the opposite of an overall understanding of patients. "Although we all know theoretically how important this is, we still encounter a lot of resistance," says Montevecchi.

Reduce burnout risk

The fact is that many hospitals do not use the opportunities of technological progress. «The problem is not so much the medical-technical aspect, but rather the administrative-communicative», adds the expert. Hospitals need to face this challenge and the associated change processes so that everyone can benefit. Above all, he thinks of the patients as well as the employees. Because: "We know that the burnout risk in the healthcare sector is steadily increasing. That's why we need to be careful with this resource. "At the same time, it's important to reduce resistance by spending more time explaining to the staff the reasons and, most importantly, the benefits of the changes.

High savings possible

Montevecchi knows from experience that savings of up to 30 percent can be achieved through process review, process redesign and lean health care alone by reducing unnecessary steps and reorganizing specific tasks. However, he also emphasizes that while cost savings are an important aspect, the overall optimization of patient pathway brings far more benefits: employees save time, which in turn they can spend with patients. An essential aspect that contributes to improving the quality of patient experience and care.
